- It's been a while. - Rickie Fowler, one of the most popular players in golf, can wear the brightest orange clothing from his Oklahoma State collection for the first two rounds of the Players Championship on Thursday and Friday, and he'll still be virtually invisible in his group thanks to being paired with Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.

It will be the eighth tournament appearance for the 42-year-old already in 2018, suggesting he is finally over the back issues that blighted him for two years. "It was the most remarkable golf in the history of the game, and I think unrepeatable".

This week's PLAYERS features 50 of the top 50 players in the FedExCup, and the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Like Mickelson's infamous line in a 2003 magazine interview about Tiger using "inferior" equipment, and the eye roll from Woods after Mickelson went OB during an ill-fated four-ball pairing by Captain Hal Sutton in the opening session of the 2004 Ryder Cup. "I struggled with it", Woods said. "We give each other needle".

"How many times have we won on tour?" he said. They have 122 TOUR wins between them.

Former Players champions Adam Scott and Martin Kaymer have been grouped with defending champion Si Woo Kim.

"I don't think anybody today who wasn't there to witness it, and I don't think anybody before, will ever see that level of play again, " Mickelson said Tuesday at TPC-Sawgrass, where the Players Championship begins on Thursday.

Woods made the cut for the final day but was unable to challenge for the Green Jacket as he finished one-over par.

Could we see a winner-take all, one-off match between the pair at some point?

Has Fowler heard the stories?

"I love this tournament", said Mickelson.

You can hear that kind of talk in any sports bar about any legend, but golf and this PLAYERS offers a twist. I just can't physically do it'.

Mickelson, 47, won the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship in March, ending a almost five-year drought.

For the better part of 20 years, Woods and Mickelson were the face of golf. "I said, 'Yeah, you and I have the same philosophy in how we approach chipping and how we do it".

Woods, who like Reed is sponsored by Nike, responded, "Whatever the Masters champion is wearing I will wear, I will copy".

Lefty still got in a few jabs that year. At the time, Woods was just weeks away from completing the Tiger Slam by winning the Masters to claim his fourth consecutive major title. For those who weren't there, Mickelson said, it's hard to explain.

It is remembered as the Duel at Doral, an epic day where Mickelson entered the fray in the form of his life having won two of his last three events with some low scores. "We'll play for whatever makes him uncomfortable".

"It was 12 years between wins here, and so as you all know, just looking at my record, I didn't play this place well ..."

Woods sometimes allows his thoughts to drift to that golden era. To hold all those events concurrently was special. He was there, for example, when Woods rolled in his "better than most" putt on No. 17 at the 2001 Players.

On Tuesday, Mickelson added a playful touch to the proceedings.

Woods had his own message. The same goes for Spieth and Thomas. The guys now, they often ask me, "Come on, Phil, really, how much better could it possibly have been?"

Throughout the duo's careers, the general consensus has been that there was some sort of animosity between them that went beyond the normal competitive fire. In their most recent pairing, in the first two rounds of the 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla, Mickelson was a dozen strokes better.
