Central Intelligence Agency nominee deserves scrutiny for demonstrable lack of a moral compass

McCain announced past year that he had been diagnosed with brain cancer, and he issued a statement Wednesday calling on his fellow senators to oppose Gina Haspel, Trump's nominee for Central Intelligence Agency director, whose ties to the use of interrogation methods widely considered torture have drawn significant criticism. Though she didn't oppose the interrogation techniques, they were not her call, she claimed. Not only does he still not believe that it amounts to torture, but he's recommended that the techniques be reinstated whenever asked.

He then again called out the questions for being "based more on partisan politics than reality".

Senator John McCain (R-AZ) speaks during a press conference about his resistance to the so-called "Skinny Repeal" of the Affordable Care Act on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., July 27, 2017.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney made no apologies for enhanced interrogation techniques and believes the US should "not discontinue" them.

"Senator, what I believe sitting here today is that I support the higher moral standards we have made a decision to hold ourselves to". Yet despite her many accomplishments, colleagues say, she is a paragon of humility with zero political ambition. How could she? If it was not immoral, it would probably still be legal. Harris' overbearing questions about morality were demeaning, nonsensical, and completely devoid of relevance to today's security needs.

"No, you've not", Harris said, and asked it again.

But beyond that, Trump would have to be insane to order the use of EITs, for several reasons even beyond the moral implications of these techniques, which are undeniably considerable.

She also said that she doesn't believe in torture works. Harris, after noting that the question was still not answered, moved on. John McCain, R-Arizona, has been away from D.C. undergoing cancer treatment. Her response to questioning about torture is indicative of the present moral condition of the people who run this country.

The exact contours of that oversight are not clear. "I'd have them active and ready to go, and I'd go back and study them and learn".

Among the attributes that has put Ms. Harris, who spent her high school years in Montreal, high on the list of favourites for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president are her punishing prosecutorial skills.

The classification-induced confusion obscures accountability at a moment when it is critical.

Many Democrats have also spoken out against her nomination.

Reflective of the depths we have fallen morally as a nation is the very presence of Guantanamo and other "black sites" where torture is carried out in our name. "We were all committed".

Haspel said she did not believe it works but that al Qaeda operatives who were interrogated did give up useful information. Instead of applauding the president for empowering her by offering her a top job and top pay in government - and the unique opportunity to break a glass ceiling and become the first woman in history to lead the venerable spy agency - Democrats are obstructing her ascent.

Ms. Haspel is right that before the enhanced interrogation program was created in response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, C.I.A. interrogations usually entailed a conversation or polygraph exam with potential informants or defectors.

She faces what will likely be a close confirmation vote in the full Senate.

Democratic Senator Martin Heinrich asked her, 'Doesn't that feel like a cover-up?'

Senator Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, has made his support for Haspel well known, stating that he has "found Gina Haspel to be a person of great character". "I was an interrogator in that program during the most controversial time, and I know who my boss was".
