Turkey's leading aid agencies will help millions of oppressed people in almost 100 countries across the globe during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Saudi Arabia and other Muslim nations, like Indonesia, declared Ramadan would not begin Wednesday based on a moon-sighting methodology.

"Families and friends will reflect on the values at the heart of Ramazan, like compassion, gratitude, and generosity", Trudeau added.

Millions of Muslims have begun the fasting month of Ramadan on Wednesday.

The announcement was made by the Grand Mufti of Australia, Abdul Azim Al Afifi on the council's official Facebook page.

During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims endure a period of daily fasting - the biggest act of religious observance of its kind. Before the crack of dawn, Muslims consume Sehri, a meal taken to start the day, and Iftar after the sunset to break the fast.

The lunar month lasts between 29 and 30 days depending on the sighting of the moon. The person fasting abstains not only from food and drinks from dawn to dusk, but also from lying or speaking ill about anyone behind their backs or do anything that is morally incorrect. Known as Ramzan or Ramadan, the holy month will commence from May 16 in India.

Many pilgrims from around the world travel to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah for Umrah during Ramadan.

The news of the date of the Start of the Ramadan came today after a national Muslim council meeting.

While many students may likely be facing a similar dilemma, at least one sees the decision to not fast during exams as a personal - and nuanced - one.

Fasting is meant to bring the faithful closer to God and remind them of those less fortunate. It is followed by the Eid al-Fitr festival.

A typical greeting is Ramadan Mubarak, which implies "have a blessed Ramadan".

"As the holy month begins, I wish all those celebrating a very happy and prosperous Ramadhan Kareem".
