"We believe that they are not factually supported by the evidence", he said.

"My job is not to defend behaviour", he said. Mr. Weinstein's power was enormous, his and his lawyers' connections were extensive, and he was often able to buy or coerce the silence of any accusers. That's not what this is about.

Rose McGowan took a victory lap on Megyn Kelly's hour of Today show, the day Harvey Weinstein turned himself in and was booked on rape charges in Manhattan.

Weinstein's defense attorney, Benjamin Brafman, said, "I did not come here to try the case", and emphasized how his client was "aware of this for many months" and how he voluntarily surrendered to police. A few, including Asia Argento and Rose McGowan, said they were raped.

Once one of the most powerful men in the film industry, Weinstein had always been rumored to have engaged in sexual misconduct - but it was not until reports in The New York Times and The New Yorker surfaced decades' worth of sexual assault and harassment allegations that the producer experienced his precipitate fall from grace last autumn.

"He's not taking responsibility for a single one of these victims", she said in an interview.

In a statement, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance called the women who pressed charges "brave" and referred to the investigation into Weinstein's behavior "ongoing".

Weinstein was then taken to Manhattan Supreme Court and was released on $1 million bail and fitted with an ankle tag.

A jury would not believe the women, Brafman said, "assuming we get 12 fair people who are not consumed by the movement that seems to have overtaken this case".

According to CNN, Weinstein will face charges that "he raped one woman and forced another to perform oral sex on him".

In total, more than 100 women have come forward to accuse Weinstein of rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment, in cases that stretch back decades.

He denies non-consensual sex and his lawyer said he would plead not guilty.

In the statement released by the New York Police Department, they thank "these courageous survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice".

Prosecutors charged him with two counts of rape and one count of a criminal sexual act following a months-long investigation with the New York Police Department.

Weinstein, 66, surrendered Friday at the New York City Police Department's 1st Precinct in Lower Manhattan.

London's Metropolitan Police have said they are investigating an allegation of sexual assault against Weinstein, while prosecutors in Los Angeles said in February they were reviewing three accusations of sexual assault against him.

While Weinstein is the subject of an active investigation in NY, he's also under investigation for alleged sex crime in Los Angeles and London. We stand with the fearless women who came forward against Harvey Weinstein.

Weinstein's arrest perhaps the highest point of the #MeToo movement so far, was nevertheless eclipsed by reports breaking against Morgan Freeman, for alleged sexual harassment against women.
