He would become the highest-ranking North Korean to visit the United States since General Jo Myong Rok went to the White House to see President Bill Clinton in 2000, part of a denuclearization effort that went nowhere.

Analysts believe Washington is trying to determine whether North Korea is willing to agree on sufficient steps toward denuclearisation to allow a summit to take place.

Former CIA Director Michael Hayden said he is unsure President Trump has "done the homework needed" for negotiations with North Korea over its nuclear program.
