It was Costa Rica's only threat in a dominant first-half display by England.

A spectacular strike from Marcus Rashford helped England to a 2-0 win over Costa Rica in Thursday's friendly clash at Elland Road.

Marcus Rashford and Danny Welbeck scored in either half for the Three Lions, who will now prepare for their opening match in Russian Federation - against Tunisia on June 18.

Goals from Marcus Rashford and Danny Welbeck earned Gareth Southgate's side a comfortable win over the 2014 quarter-finalists, with several players making their claims for a starting spot in Russian Federation.

"Everybody's in the frame", the England coach said.

"Football's coming home" chanted fans throughout a largely encouraging display from Southgate's young squad, who have a brief break before meeting up and heading to Russian Federation on Tuesday. Nothing that the England manager didn't already know.

In England's last match before their tournament opener against Tunisia in 11 days time, Manchester United's Rashford was the star of a much-changed side.

"It means a lot to be involved but going to the World Cup and playing a major part in my main aim", said the 20-year-old Rashford.

The United academy player is expected to be a big player for England this summer with many supporters recognising his ability to spark his team to life. "If I was thinking I have no one to play in this position or in that position, it would be a very different situation". But we believe in him.

Danny Rose and the uncapped Trent Alexander-Arnold should also feature at Elland Road in the final warm-up match before the tournament in Russian Federation.

The link-up play between Loftus-Cheek and Rashford on England's right-hand side, causing problems for Costa Rica's defence with the pair constantly fouled as they formed most of the attack - Loftus-Cheek was fouled more than any other player (five) and also completed 100% of his 34 passes.

Rashford endured a hard end to the season at United, scoring just four times in 2018 at club level, and suffering some stinging criticism from Jose Mourinho.
