Given all the mischief Vladimir Putin creates, it can be easy to forget that Russian Federation is only the 12th-largest economy in the world, about 1/14th the size of the US.

Trump on Saturday withdrew support for a joint statement issued by the other G-7 nations ― Canada, the U.K. Germany, France, Italy and Japan ― just hours after expressing support for it.

"I agree with him, and to have a meaningful discussion, our ministries of foreign affairs and experts should get involved and work closely together, and of course a meeting in person is necessary", Putin said.

Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and the other leaders clashed with Trump over steel and aluminum tariffs as well as his decision to abandon a deal with Iran to limit its nuclear program.

The statement made no mention of Russian Federation being invited back into the group from which it was kicked out in response to its 2014 annexation of Crimea, despite US President Donald Trump's insistence that the club would be better off if it brought Russian Federation back into the fold.

"We urge Russian Federation to cease its destabilising behaviour, to undermine democratic systems and its support of the Syrian regime", the leaders said in a statement at the end of their two-day meeting in La Malbaie, Quebec.

Trump faces his own problems with the G-7′s other members, especially over trade policy.

Noting that Russian Federation and other members of the Eurasian Economic Union "also have disputes and do not unanimously sign everything at the same time", he played down the furor over Trump's undiplomatic diplomacy: "We can see that there are internal problems there".

Trump said he would not endorse a G7 communique after Trudeau informed president that Canadians "will not be pushed around on trade matters". "As soon as the US side is ready, the meeting will take place, depending, of course, on my working schedule".

During the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin told the assembled leaders, including Rouhani, that the USA withdrawal could "destabilise the situation" but Moscow still supports the "unconditional implementation" of the deal. But Russia was suspended from the group in 2014 after it annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine. Meanwhile, there may never have been a president of the United States who is so unremittingly hostile to America's closest allies. "They should let Russia come back in because we should have Russia at the negotiating table." adding, "I think it would be an asset to have Russia back in".

"The US unilateralism was not good for the world".

Before the medal ceremony, Putin said the two heads of state had enjoyed "fruitful" talks.

"The Qingdao summit is a new departure point for us", he added.

Leaders of G7 countries have agreed the creation of a rapid response unit to combat hostile state activity, warning that "interference by Russian Federation and other foreign states" would not be tolerated.
