Antoine Griezmann announces he will stay at Atletico Madrid in 'The Decision'

Being away on global duty with France at the World Cup was not enough to quell the speculation, made all the worse when the Atletico Madrid forward revealed that he would be announcing his plans in a televised segment later that evening - in a similar manner to LeBron James' infamous "Decision" announcement in 2010.

France star Griezmann has always been linked with a move away from Atleti, with Barca holding talks with the 27-year-old's representatives in the latter stages of the 2017-18 season.

@TaintlessRed tweeted: 'Griezmann's look-at-me egotistical announcement is one of the most embarrassing things I can think of any player doing that wasn't illegal'.

Griezmann, who had said he would clarify his future before France's World Cup opener against Australia on Saturday, posted a video on social media on Thursday evening in which he confirmed he was staying put.

Griezmann, 27, joined Atletico in July 2014 from Real Sociedad and has finished top scorer with the Madrid side in each season he has been at the club.

"But it is not bad luck, something has been missing, and in the league we are always second or third, we are missing something".

Yet in a painfully extended television special that included footage of Antoine getting a tattoo, playing basketball, showing off his skills in a go-kart, emotional hugs for his mother and suggestions that he has agonised over the decision for several months, Griezmann gave Atletico fans the news they were hoping for. How much they won't pay me.

His "decision" behind him, Griezmann can now focus on the World Cup with France.
