Democratic attorneys general are demanding the Trump administration end a "zero tolerance" policy that has resulted in children being separated from their parents at the U.S. -Mexico border.

Trump discussed immigration during remarks in front of the National Federation of Independent Business's 75th anniversary celebration.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced in April that the administration would take a "zero tolerance" approach to illegal immigration, directing all US attorneys who serve in districts along the United States' southern border with Mexico to criminally prosecute all cases of attempted illegal entry or illegal entry that are referred by DHS.

"Ms Grisham went on to say that "[Melania] believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart", a line which supports the president's recent policy decision to criminally prosecute all adults attempting to cross illegally into the U.S. over the southern border. It is resulting in prosecution of ALL individuals who are caught illegally crossing the border, and consequently whenever a parent or adult is accompanied by a child, they are separated.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen says she hasn't heard newly released audio of crying children who have been separated from their families at the U.S. -Mexico border.

Recent polls show two-thirds of Americans oppose the family separation policy, which Trump has falsely blamed on Democrats.

"She believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart".

With the volume of the wailing shrill, and coming from multiple kids, a US Border Patrol agent can be heard saying in Spanish: "well, we have quite an orchestra here". In reality, contrary to Trump's tweet, Germany's overall crime rate is at its lowest since 1992, its interior minister said in May. "We will not apologize for the job we do, for the job law enforcement does and for the job the American people expect us to do".

Some moderate Republicans have also called on Trump to stop the separations.

The policy reportedly led DHS to separate about 2,000 children from their parents, as children are not allowed in adult criminal detention facilities. She said the government had high standards for detention centres and the children were well cared for, stressing that Congress needs to plug loopholes in the law so families can stay together.

A rival, compromise GOP immigration measure includes language curbing the separation of immigrant children from parents when they are detained.

Mr Trump, whose hard-line stance on immigration is a major policy of his presidency, responded sharply to critics on Monday. "These children did not make the choice to cross the border and shouldn't be punished for it", she said.

She said Mrs. Trump hopes both sides "can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform".

President Trump will be on Capitol Hill Tuesday to meet with Republicans on possible immigration bills. Senator Merkley hasn't ruled out running for president in 2020, while Senator Van Hollen is in charge of Senate Democrats' 2018 campaign committee. "There is no other way to say it, this is not who we are and it must end now".

Compared to German, Trump added, "Other countries are even worse", urging, "Be smart America!"
