The photograph, which was tweeted by a Pakistani journalist, and retweeted by Nawaz Sharif's daughter, shows Maryam breaking down as her father Nawaz Sharif keeps his hand on Begum Kulsoom's forehead, hours before they head to the airport to return to Pakistan, where they would be arrested upon arrival.

"Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz have the right to appeal", he said. "I have done what I could".

Hours before his imminent arrest, Mr Sharif said, "Maryam and I are coming back to face prison, and even if they send me to the gallows, we know that freedom can not be won without sacrifice". But I'm doing this for people of Pakistan, sacrificing for generations to come.

Party spokesperson Marriyum Aurenzeb told PTI that police arrested the workers, mostly from Lahore, to stop them from welcoming Sharif at the airport.

Meanwhile, the interior government and NAB said that Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz would be arrested at the airport, said the interim government on Thursday. The two were in London visiting Sharif's ailing wife when a Pakistani court convicted them of corruption and sent them to prison.

Sharif is returning from Britain one week after an anti-corruption court handed him a 10-year jail term over the purchase of luxury London flats and sentenced his daughter and political heir to seven years in prison. "We can't let them roam around in Lahore".

The Cabinet Division has reportedly allocated two helicopters - reserved for the prime minister - to NAB to shift Sharif and his daughter to the jail from the airport. They said this would be in addition to the arrest of main activists of the party.

Heavy contingents of police and Rangers have been deployed on all the entry and exit points of Lahore.

"Section 144 has been imposed for us while Imran Khan has been permitted to hold a rally in Defence Housing Authority", he said, adding, "You can do all the rigging you want, we will still win the July 25 polls". The military denied the accusations saying their assistance in carrying out the elections was requested by Pakistan's Election Commission. Shahbaz Sharif is expected to lead a rally to Lahore's Allama Iqbal International Airport to receive Nawaz Sharif and his daughter.

The meeting will review the overall situation pertaining to the return of former prime minister.
