Unai Emery Releases Statement On Mesut Ozil

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has defended Mezut Ozil after the German star quit the national team following a backlash over his photo with the president of Turkey.

Ozil, who has Turkish roots, had been under fire since posing for a controversial photograph with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in May which sparked questions about his loyalty to Germany's squad ahead of the tournament in Russian Federation.

"He is a very important player and we want him to perform and feel comfortable".

The new Arsenal manager Emery might have hoped for a more straightforward assignment as he spoke to the media for the first time in south-east Asia but the morning was overshadowed by the continuing furore surrounding Ozil's decision.

It also condemned "the treatment, threats and derogatory messages" against Ozil and asked the football community to stand united against "racism and intolerance".

The Turkish Football Federation also issued a statement, saying it "offers its full support" to Ozil and his family.

"It's a personal decision (which) I respect", Emery told reporters in Singapore a day before Arsenal play Atletico Madrid in the pre-season International Champions Cup tournament. We know the football [world] around us is about opinion and critique, we have a mentality and quality to work away from this opinion.

"Everybody at the club is thinking like me to help him and to feel (good) here and express his quality with us".

"We are like his home".

Arsenal forward Reiss Nelson and midfielder Alex Iwobi sat alongside Ozil at the fan event in Singapore.

"He's training really well, he's happy to be with us and we're happy to have him back as well because he is one of the key players in our team and we need him to be fit and ready for the season".

"He arrived on Sunday to travel and I prefer to give him the normality in the team and for him to feel good with us", said the Spanish coach, who is backing Ozil to respond brightly to any negative fallout.
