Trump calls on Sessions to end Russian Federation probe 'right now'

President Donald Trump will decide once and for all whether to sit down with special counsel Robert Mueller within a week to 10 days, his lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, said Thursday.

US attorneys are prosecuting Manafort on charges of failing to pay taxes on millions he made from his work for a Russia-friendly Ukrainian political party and then lying to get loans when the cash stopped coming in.

In a Tuesday tweet immediately following the start of Manafort's trial, Trump said that charges against his former campaign manager had "nothing to do with collusion" and suggested that any attempt to establish links to Russian Federation was "a Hoax".

Trump has accused Mueller of having unspecified conflicts of interest and said yesterday on Twitter that Attorney General Jeff Sessions should "stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now".

"It's the president's opinion, and it's ridiculous that all of the corruption and dishonesty that's gone on with the launching of the witch-hunt the president has watched this process play out, but he also wants to see it come to an end as he stated many times and we look forward to that", White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said.

"It's not an order".

"It's the president's opinion", she said.

One of the president's confidants deemed Trump in "a dark place", seething about the longlasting probe and the media's depiction of his White House under siege.

"The president is not obstructing; he's fighting back".

US intelligence officials are anxious Russian Federation and perhaps other foreign actors look to interfere in November's elections, just as Moscow did in 2016, members of President Donald Trump's national security team said Thursday.

Coats says Russian Federation "stepped up their game big-time in 2016" to meddle in the election.

President Trump ordered his attorney general to fire special counsel Mueller and end the Russian Federation investigation "right now".

Rosenstein in turn appointed Mueller and is the person with the authority to fire him.

Mueller - who has interviewed other high profile members of Trump's campaign, transition and administration - has long sought a meeting with the president.

Trump has repeatedly belittled the probe as "a hoax", as those close to him suggest he feels that any talk of Russian interference tarnishes his electoral victory and delegitimizes his presidency.

"They ought to let them conclude their work".

The US president has said the charges against Mr Manafort "have nothing to do with collusion".

Senator Orrin Hatch said he did not think Sessions had the power to end the probe and it would be unwise to do so.

Giuliani's remarks come a day after he called for Mueller's probe to present evidence of collusion between the US and Russian Federation during the 2016 election, or to disband the investigation altogether. The New York Times reported last week that Mueller's office was examining negative tweets and statements by Trump about Sessions and former FBI Director James Comey.Trump fired Comey in May 2017.

"The president has taken decisive action to defend our election systems from meddling and interference", national security adviser John Bolton said at the briefing.

Trump's tweet is viewed as the most direct call that demands Sessions intervene to end the probe, which critics say amounts to an attempt to obstruct justice, a claim that Sanders rejected.
