Meeting in Trump Tower Was to Get Information on Clinton

During his weekend tweet storm, Trump weighed in on a key aspect of Trump's inquiry, the June 2016 meeting that included, among others, Donald Trump Jr., and a Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya. Trump claimed that the meeting was "totally legal and done all the time in politics", adding that he had no knowledge about it at the time.

He concluded by distancing himself from the meeting his son arranged, writing: "I did not know about it!" Liberal commentators have uninhibitedly called the US President a traitor, even as Trump and his base have argued that Democrat and liberal charges in this regard are just a case of sour grapes after they lost an election they were widely expected to win.

At the time, in July 2017, Trump offered a similar comment to the one he made on Sunday, dismissing the meeting with a Russian lawyer promising dirt on his political opponent as no big deal.

He later admitted he accepted the meeting with Veselnitskaya in hopes of obtaining damaging information on Clinton, but said nothing came of it.

It was later reported that was false and the president was involved in constructing his son's misleading statement. Trump's disclosure came in response to a story that he was increasingly concerned about the possibility of Russian Federation probe by the FBI Special Counsel Robert Mueller zeroing on his son who was part of a meeting that was purportedly claimed to be about adoption.

Donald Trump Jr's phone line disconnected on conservative radio host Laura Ingraham's show on Monday just as she was asking him about his Trump Tower meeting with Russians.

Trump then particularly went after recent reporting about Robert Mueller's probe into possible links between his campaign and Russian officials, particularly stories on how he may be concerned about his eldest son's legal exposure.

In addition to weighing in publicly on the Trump Tower meeting, the president also unleashed angry tweets directed at the news media Sunday morning from his 11-day working vacation in Bedminster, New Jersey.

The admission is a significant departure from Trump's previous statements regarding the controversial meeting with a Kremlin-linked lawyer. "You know that's not the premise that got them in the room and then they started it was essentially a bait and switch to talk about that, and everyone has basically said that in testimony already".

In January this year, Trump lawyers John Dowd and Sekulow wrote to Mueller, in part, that "the president dictated a short but accurate response to the New York Times article on behalf of his son, Donald Trump Jr".

And Donald Trump Jr. put out a statement that was in that article where he said that the meeting was primarily to discuss a program about the adoption of Russian children.

What did President Trump say?

Trump's latest offensive against stories he does not like about his 18-month presidency came hours after he rallied supporters in the midwestern state of Ohio.

KEITH: Well, lots of things cause heartburn for President Trump's lawyers. Dowd subsequently resigned from the Trump team. But also, they didn't give us anything good, and we didn't act on it.

On what is wrong with this meeting: My problem with all of this, it takes me back to the Clinton years, my problem is okay he may not have committed any crimes that's fine and if he hasn't we should say that.
