Commercial Space-Astronauts story

The first USA astronauts who will fly on American-made, commercial spacecraft to and from the International Space Station. These nine American astronauts will launch on the first missions from American soil in American spacecraft since the Shuttle program ended in 2011.

Boeing's capsule will be manned during the test flight by Eric Boe and Christopher Ferguson, both shuttle missions veterans, and Nicole Aunapu Mann, at her first flight to space. These missions mostly include veterans from the Space Shuttle program, though it will be Aunapu Mann and Cassada's first trips to space. Since then, the space agency has turned to private space firms, like SpaceX, to oversee cargo runs to the ISS, while sending U.S. astronauts there on Russian rockets.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, who made the introductions at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas on Friday.

In 2014, Boeing and SpaceX were awarded a combined $6.8 billion in contracts from NASA to develop spacecraft capable of flying crews to the station, the orbiting laboratory. "Today's announcement advances our great American vision and strengthens the nation's leadership in space". The space enthusiast said that, should the two Crew Dragon test flights perform well, the hardware will be ready. Robert Behnken, a former Air Force colonel, will join former Marine Corps colonel Douglas Hurley on the Crew Dragon test flight. It turns out NASA's much-awaited Commercial Crew Program will see its first Boeing crewed flight mid-2019 and its SpaceX one as early as April 2019.

Countries have been launching their astronauts from Russia for a long while now, as the Russian Soyuz is currently the only spacecraft that can send astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS).

According to Elon Musk and Gwynne Shotwell, Cargo Dragon was certified right from the start with a spacecraft lifespan of 3 orbital missions.

But NASA's options may be limited by the global agreements that established the station in 1998.

More astronauts will be announced to join the crews at a later date, Nasa said. He's performed six spacewalks totaling almost 40 hours.

"This is the stuff of dreams ... this is a test pilot's dream", he said.

SpaceX's ambitious Dragon Spacecraft rings in the good news of the successful completion of another International Space Station mission (CRS-15).

The first crewed flights will only spend a short period of time in orbit before coming back to Earth. If any further delays creep up, NASA's astronauts may be temporarily stranded on Earth.

Victor Glover: Glover is a native of Pomona, California and he has three master's degrees.

Ferguson is expected to fly for Boeing on Starliner's first mission to the International Space Station as well, but the second NASA crew that will accompany him will be John Cassada on his first space flight and former ISS commander Suni Williams.

Michael Hopkins was born in Lebanon, Missouri, and grew up on a farm near Richland, Missouri.

After years of vehicle development and building anticipation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has now put the crew in commercial crew spacecraft.
