Russian Federation tasks Hollywood actor Seagal with improving US ties

Seagal is an "ardent supporter" and "close friend" of Russian president Vladimir Putin, according to CNN.

On granting Seagal citizenship in 2016, Putin said he hoped it would serve as a symbol of how fractious ties between Moscow and Washington were starting to improve.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on the appointment of Mr. Seagal on August 4.

The decision to appoint celebrated actor Steven Seagal, who is a Russian citizen, as a Russian foreign ministry envoy for Russian-US humanitarian ties was a well-grounded step as Moscow sees it as a message to all those in the US who don't want bilateral cooperation to degrade, a senior Russian lawmaker told TASS on Sunday. "I take this honour very seriously", he added. The actor attended Putin's recent swearing-in ceremony in May.

Seagal, who holds a dual citizenship of the United States and Russian Federation, is known for his support of Vladimir Putin, to whom he once referred as "one of the greatest living world leaders". According to the ministry, his task will be "to facilitate relations between Russian Federation and the United States in the humanitarian field, including cooperation in culture, arts, public and youth exchanges, and so on".

This idea isn't actually new-in 2013 Putin suggested to then-President Obama that Seagal be appointed to just such a role, which left Obama "flabbergasted".

For more than a decade Seagal, who according to his own website is 66, has been a regular visitor to Russian Federation.

Seagal does seem particularly interested in the former Soviet Union.

In 2014, Seagal posted a statement on his website to clarify that he had been misquoted by media outlets saying he called Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, the world's greatest leader.
