Doug Ducey spoke at Sen.

"But in this loss, and in this sorrow, I take comfort in this: John McCain, hero of the republic and to his little girl, wakes today to something more glorious than anything on this earth".

Cindy McCain arrives for a memorial service for her husband Sen.

But as McCain meticulously planned his funeral processions in detail and invited many notable politicians prior to his death, he intentionally boxed Trump out, an unprecedented move against a sitting president. Ducey is also headed for a tough reelection battle in the fall, and is seeking a smooth replacement process.

McCain, who died on Saturday, served as a Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate for decades, during which time he cultivated a reputation as a maverick who wasn't afraid to put country over party, especially during the administration of Donald Trump.

U.S. District Judge Diane Humetewa, who is Hopi, retired Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Luis Gonzales and former Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan are among 14 friends acting as pallbearers.

McCain's staff says the campaign-style signs are replicas of his 2008 presidential campaign.

McCain will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol on Friday, where the public may pay their respects.

The Capitol was then opened to the public in the afternoon, allowing visitors to walk past the closed casket after waiting in line outside in temperatures that reached 104 degrees (40 Celsius). Attendees included three of McCain's onetime Republican colleagues from Arizona's congressional delegation - retiring Senator Jeff Flake, former Senator Jon Kyl and former Congressman James Kolbe.

Other military members in uniform congregated on the Capitol plaza.

He will be buried in a private funeral on Sunday at the Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, Maryland, next to his best friend, Adm. "I asked him one time, I said how do you remember their names?"

"I know that the eulogies and the things that will be said will just remind us all just who John McCain was and how he affected Arizona and America and the world", Brewer said.

"We definitely have lost a strong advocate, so we'll need someone who is going to step up to the plate, " Hatch said.

"I had never known that", McCain said.

The change does present some concerns, however. Celaya said he was most impressed with McCain's willingness to fight for his beliefs.

"I don't talk about the bad side of the war", Le said.

According to the New York Post, pallbearers include actor Warren Beatty, Mayor Mike Bloomberg, former Senator Gary Hart and former Vice President Joe Biden.

After Thursday's church service, a motorcade will take McCain's casket to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport for a final salute from members of the Arizona Air and Army National Guard.
