Parts of the northern Gulf Coast could end up under a Tropical Storm Watch within the next day as the National Hurricane Center refines its forecast.

The center said in its 11 a.m. EDT advisory that Tropical Storm Florence was located about 225 miles (365 kilometers) west of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands off the west coast of Africa. Tropical-storm-force wind gusts are possible today across portions of South Florida and the Keys.

Tropical Storm Gordon has formed near the upper Florida Keys.

Flash flood watches have been issued for seven states from Houston to Kansas City and into northern IL, just northwest of Chicago.

Beyond Florence, models consistently show a string of potent tropical waves leaving Africa, so the peak of the season should be active.

There are now three tropical systems forecasters are watching on Monday morning.

The storm is expected to cross from southwest Florida into the Gulf Coast later Monday afternoon.

The storm is expected to make landfall in the southern Louisiana area around New Orleans sometime Tuesday night.

Sustained winds this morning at Palm Beach International Airport have been running about 9 to 20 mph, with a 21 mph gust recorded before 2 a.m. Miami International Airport reported gusts of up to 35 mph before 9 a.m.

This is expected to move northwest over South Florida on Labor Day and into the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday.

Gordon, the Atlantic's seventh storm, could graze the eastern edge of the off-shore oil and natural gas platforms. Threats to these locations include heavy rainfall, flooding and gusty winds. A storm surge watch was extended eastward from the border to Navarre, Florida, and a tropical storm warning was extended eastward to the Okaloosa-Walton county line.

The NHC has also issued a flash-flood watch for large parts of the Louisiana coast into the Houston area.

A Tropical Storm Watch means conditions of a tropical storm are expected within 48 hours in the USA state.
