When Thiem finally broke down, with a botched smash on match point, the clock showed 2.04am in NY and the match duration was 4 hours 49 minutes, making it Nadal's longest ever match at Flushing Meadows.

Thiem became the first player since Andy Roddick in 2004 to win a love set against Nadal in NY but the Spaniard once again dug deep to come out on top of a gruelling battle played in more punishing humidity.

US Open champion Rafael Nadal overcame a rare bagel and a relentless challenge from Dominic Thiem in an epic five-set quarter-final clash lasting nearly five hours in NY.

Rafael Nadal's player's box for his thrilling 5-setter on Tuesday night at the US Open had a very special guest.

The top-ranked Spaniard improved to 8-2 in fourth-round matches in the US Open, rebounding from dropping the tiebreaker in the third set to break the Georgian's serve twice in the fourth set.

Nadal moves forward to a clash with Juan Martin del Potro, who defeated John Isner, in a rematch of last year's semi-final.

Pliskova is a big server and hitter in her own right, someone who briefly spent time at No. 1 in the WTA rankings and was the runner-up at the U.S. Open in 2016, when she beat Williams in the semifinals. I tried to stay in the match some way in the second set.

"If he decides to stand far back, Rafa will be thinking "yum yum, I can get my forehand into play".

"I am the guy to look at myself", Nadal said.

At 5-5 and 0-40, Thiem saved all three break points and forced the fifth set into a tiebreak, but it was Nadal who came out on top when the Austrian sent a smash long.

The conclusion to the near five-hour quarter-final, which ended after 2am local time, came in a tie-break.

"I'm very sorry for Dominic", Nadal told a rowdy crowd in Arthur Ashe Stadium. Serving for the set at 5-3, Nadal got broken as well after a deep return from Thiem but he managed to clinch the set with another break in game 10, forcing an error from Dominic to level the overall score at 1-1.

It was only the fourth time in his long Grand Slam history that Nadal had lost a set 6-0 and just the third time at any level in almost seven years.

Nadal recovered from being broken as he served for the second set in the ninth game with an immediate break back to level the contest. He then rallied past Taylor Fritz 3-6 6-3 7-6 6-4 before beating 2017 finalist Kevin Anderson in straight sets 7-5 6-2 7-6.

"First of all, I served really, really well today", Thiem said.

Leading 6-5 with a chance to take match point, Nadal mishit what looked like an easy volley into the net. "It's good to have now two days [without a match] that probably give me the chance to be 100 per cent in the semi-finals". As usual, he had to do it without the benefit of many cheap points; he hit just three aces, 15 fewer than Thiem.
