Del Potro is known for his powerful serve and Djokovic knows he will have his work cut out to seal a 14th Grand Slam and a third at the US Open.

"He's a great guy", said Djokovic who missed the 2017 tournament through injury.

Thankfully, the 21st seed appeared to avoid injury and duly played his best tennis of the match after dropping the first set, fighting hard to stay with his illustrious opponent.

Del Potro led 7-6 (3), 6-2 when the defending champion was forced to stop playing.

Nishikori was outclassed in the third and must wonder if he will ever record another victory over Djokovic, who rounded proceedings off in fitting fashion with a sensational backhand victor. That was followed by three procedures on his left wrist, which sidelined him for 2 1/2 years' worth of Grand Slam tournaments. But the more ominous match was their clash a year ago at this same place, time and stage.

Tiger Woods and Serena Williams both know how to make a comeback.

"I can not believe that I will have a chance to play another Grand Slam final here, which is my favorite tournament", Del Potro said. "So when you are back, you always appreciate the things that happens, and have more value, more personal value, when you come from tough moments".

The Nike endorsers are rooting each other on about 120 miles apart - Williams at Flushing Meadows and Woods in the BMW Championship in suburban Philadelphia.

"All my career everybody say that because of my style, I will have a short career", said Nadal. But, boy, he never gave up. I am having a lot of success. I'm not at liberty to talk about it. "I will be proud if I (am) still playing tennis for more years".

Woods said he's been watching a lot of tennis this week and returned the tip of the cap toward Williams.

Mike Bryan broke a tie for most major doubles titles with John Newcombe, and at 40 years, 4 months became the oldest Grand Slam doubles champion in the professional era. So Mike paired with Sock and they won Wimbledon in just their second event together. This is Bryan and Sock's second straight major title. Six of his titles, also a record, have come at the US Open.

Nadal tried to put a courageous face on it but the defending champion could not hide his frustration after yet another physical setback denied him the chance to add to his haul of Grand Slam titles. They are the first pair to win Wimbledon and the US Open in the same year since Jonas Bjorkman and Todd Woodbridge in 2003.

The 13-time Grand Slam champion will take on Juan Martin del Potro, with the Serb seeking his first US Open title since 2015.

Del Potro will face either Serbia's Novak Djokovic or Japan's Kei Nishikori in the final. He's done it before, but only four times in 18 meetings.

Del Potro, who has also had his career disrupted by injuries, was not happy to get the victory the way he did. The No. 3 seed has lost to Nadal in the semifinals in three of the last four Grand Slam tournaments.

By then, so much time had passed since his crowning achievement, winning the 2009 U.S. Open at age 20 by beating Roger Federer in five sets in the final.
