Jets vs. Lions: Final Week 1 injury and weather report

Lee then mentioned how dedicated Darnold is, and how hard he works, and how "Uncle Josh", i.e. 39-year-old Josh McCown, keeps the rookie steady... but perhaps what matters most is how much this young quarterback, barely of legal drinking age, a few weeks removed from taking third-team reps in training camp, has the belief of the rest of the locker room.

Since his first pass, which was taken back for Lions pick-six, Darnold has looked like a whole new player. It was the first time the Jets had scored 40 points or more since the opener in 2012 against the Bills. Not one - no pick-sixes, no fumble recoveries - none.

Remember the knock on Sam Darnold coming out of USC? He wasn't dinking and dunking, either, as he averaged a whopping3 9.4 yards per attempt.

But what happened from there was distinctly non-Jets-like. Darnold thew a pretty pass down the left sideline and Anderson made a nice grab in the end zone for the 41-yard score and a 17-7 lead.

Darnold threw an interception on his very first National Football League play, and Detroit's Quandre Diggs returned it 37 yards for a touchdown to give the Lions an early lead over the New York Jets on Monday night.

There was an energy the Jets' entire team hadn't showed for a while.

It was a miserable coaching debut for Detroit's Matt Patricia.

One victory doesn't make the Jets a Super Bowl team, but the lopsided nature of this one is hard to ignore, and now NY has winnable games the next two weeks against Miami and at Cleveland.

OK, so Darnold didn't suddenly go from goat to GOAT in the same game.

Darnold helped the Jets set a franchise record for points on the road, surpassing the 47 they scored in 1967 against the Boston Patriots.

There was nearly nothing for the Lions to feel good about. Those were more important to getting him on the field early than his obvious arm and athleticism gifts. "He's got a lot of enthusiasm and he has a lot of respect for the game and the people around him". It's not easy to compensate for mistakes in the National Football League, but the ability to get back up and not got rattled is an unteachable quality to green QBs.

Lee, who had two interceptions, stunningly described how the Jets defense was calling out plays before the Lions snapped the ball, based on formations, personnel groupings and hand signals they'd studied on film. And yet there is something positive to take away from Detroit's woeful stretch: They enter with largely the same core of playmakers - a group that should give the Jets trouble. The Jets need to focus only on how well he laughed it off to know he can be something special.

Darnold was accommodating enough to create a joke at his expense very early into his career.
