Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's wife Kulsoom Nawaz passed away Tuesday in London, Pakistan media reported.

Confirming the news Sharif's brother and the head Pakistan Muslim League-N, Shahbaz Sharif, tweeted from his party's official Twitetr handle in Urdu, "My sister-in-law and the wife of Nawaz Sharif sahib is no more amongst us". She married Nawaz Sharif in April 1971.

Three-time-premier Nawaz Sharif, who was removed from office in each of his elected terms, has maintained that his ouster in July 2017 and subsequent conviction were part of a plot against him by the powerful military and the judiciary.

Kulsoom played a crucial role in ensuring that the PML-N remained functional during the most hard of times.

The lady, who remained an active political worker till 2017, was suffering from throat cancer in London's Harley Street Clinic since June. "The family has made a decision to bury Kulsoom Nawaz in Pakistan". According to sources, Kulsoom Nawaz will be buried in Pakistan as authoritie to bring her body back from London.

Khan termed the former first lady a "brave woman".

Born in 1950 in Lahore to a Kashmiri family, Begum Kulsoom was the granddaughter of renowned wrestler Ghulam Muhammad Bakhsh, known locally as 'Gaama Pahelwan'. She was under treatment at London's Harley Street Clinic since July past year.

"COAS expresses his grief and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family on the sad demise of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz".

"The Pakistan High Commission in the United Kingdom has been directed to provide all possible assistance to facilitate the heirs of Mrs. Kulsoom Nawaz", his office said in a statement. "May Allah bless the departed soul eternal peace at Heaven-Amen", the director general of Inter-Services Public Relations said in a message.
