Djokovic wins third US Open men's singles title

Novak Djokovic beat Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets Sunday to win the US Open and a historic 14th Grand Slam title.

Djokovic is now level on 14 titles with Pete Sampras and, in men's terms, behind only Rafael Nadal on 17 and Roger Federer's 20.

The win was the eighth straight Slam for one of the "Big 3" in men's tennis, including Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

He said: "I think I did a good tournament, but this is a tough loss for me". He won Wimbledon and a Masters event in Cincinnati.

Defeat for Argentina's Del Potro ended his chances of claiming a second US Open crown following his victory in 2009 but still capped a remarkable run after he almost quit the sport in 2015 because of ongoing injury problems.

The 31-year-old produced a ruthless display as he recorded a 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 victory at Flushing Meadows in NY. But then he was broken in his next game. He was just a little better than Del Potro at the key moments - especially in a 95-minute second set, where he saved three break points in an eighth game which stretched to eight deuces and 20 minutes.

A year after missing the U.S. Open because of an injured right elbow that would require surgery, Djokovic showed that he is unquestionably back at his best and back at the top of tennis.

"I really am. I feel like these guys, rivalries with these guys, matches with Federer and Nadal, have made me the player I am, have shaped me into the player I am today", Djokovic said, his shiny silver U.S. Open trophy resting a few feet away.

A five-day hike in the Alps transformed and inspired struggling Djoko for Flushing MeadowsWhen Novak Djokovic's year got off to a less-than-ideal start, the Serbian set off on a five-day hike in the French Alps that proved transformative.

US Open champion Novak Djokovic revealed a hike in the French mountains led to a turnaround in his season.

"To be honest, I was crying till now", Del Potro said at a news conference.

He has been the dominant player of the summer and could now end the year as the world number one.

There appears to be one winning formula for Novak Djokovic when it comes to taking home the US Open title.

Djokovic will now set his sights on conquering a different summit by reclaiming his place atop the world tennis rankings for the first time since October 2016.

She posed with her trophy at Top of the Rock Observation Deck at Rockefeller Center. He lost a set in two of his first three matches. He recouped the service break in the fifth game, but after holding serve, Djokovic went onto win the final three games of the over three-hour encounter. Barty and Vandeweghe won the second set tiebreaker 7-2 and won the third 8-6 to win for the second time in four meetings this season against Babos and Mladenovic. But winning at Ashe is as big as it gets.

"I expected, to be quite frank, after surgery that I'll be back on a high level quite fast".

After the dramatic women's final Saturday involving Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka, there was no such controversy Sunday.

Williams ended up getting a coaching violation when she was accused for receiving in-game coaching by umpire Carl Ramos.

Argentine third seed Del Potro, 29, was playing his first Grand Slam final since winning the 2009 US Open, having nearly quit the game in 2015 because of multiple wrist injures.

Del Potro hailed the victor after losing in his first final since winning the Wimbledon Title in 2009. Despite playing in eight US Open finals, he's never succeeded without scoring at Wimbledon, too.
