Claire Foy gives emotional acceptance speech for Emmy win for 'The Crown'

The glittering gala in downtown Los Angeles will see "The Handmaid's Tale" face off with record-breaking HBO fantasy epic "Game of Thrones" for top honors - especially the coveted best drama prize.

"Writing for these actors behind us is the honour of a lifetime", said the show's co-creator David Benioff.

As streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime increasingly make off with the lion's share of the Emmy Awards accolades, the TV industry's annual celebration of itself continues to shed viewers.

Best Drama Actress switched from Elisabeth Moss ("The Handmaid's Tale") to Claire Foy ("The Crown").

Marketers in the audience who may want to take advantage of the success of Emmy winners like "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" are, of course, out of luck, as advertising on the service thus far has been limited to a handful of brand integrations and some avails in its National Football League simulcasts.

Representing the ad-supported networks, FX snagged two surprising and deserved wins for "The Americans" and multiple for "The Assassination of Gianni Versace", including best actor in a limited series and best limited series. Luckily, she said yes.

One of the biggest shocks came when presumed front-runner Glover lost the comedy acting category to Bill Hader's hitman-turned-struggling actor in HBO's (T.N) showbusiness satire "Barry".

But even before the duo graced the stage, their SNL co-stars Kate McKinnon and Keenan Thompson led a song-and-dance number that poked fun at how Hollywood had "solved" its diversity problems.

"You wonder why I don't want to call you my girlfriend?"

And in one of the most rubber-stamped races at the Emmys, Best Reality-Competition Series where only three shows had ever won in 15 years, "RuPaul's Drag Race" eked out its first victory against four-time champ "The Voice".
