Kerala nun rape: Culprit will not be spared, says minister

Police in the south Indian state of Kerala have arrested a Roman Catholic bishop accused of raping a nun, a day after the Vatican accepted the bishop's request to be temporarily relieved of his duties. The following development comes to light after it was reported that the Kerala police had summoned Franco Mulakkal to Crime Branch in Kochi for questioning the rape case. "Rev. Bishop Franco Mulakkal to be temporarily relieved of his pastoral responsibilities in the Diocese of Jullundur", the Catholic Bishop Conference of India said in a statement.

He complained of chest pain when he was being taken to Kottayam Police club from the Crime Branch office in Thrippunithura in Ernakulam district Friday night, they said.

The Kerala High Court has already agreed to hear Mulakkal's anticipatory bail plea on September 25.

The protest has gathered momentum with Christian bodies, activists, writers and locals joining in and notching up demand for the bishop's arrest.

"The state government has always been with the victim and whosoever does a wrong - the wrongdoer will be taken to task", he said. This is the first time that the Bishop has been called in for questioning in Kerala since the case was filed against him in late June.

Five nuns that started the agitation demanding the arrest of the bishop 14 days back, said that they are happy.

The Bishop was on Friday arrested on charges of raping a 44-year-old nun between 2014 and 2016. KC George claimed that photographer has been intimated and forced give a statement that the victim seemed tiresome and upset.

Sexual abuse by clergymen and the failure of senior Church officials to take action has been one of the biggest scandals facing the Catholic Church in recent years in several countries. We are with the victim.

He also met Inspector General of Police Vijay Sakhre, who is heading the probe team. "If the allegations are proved right, we are ready to boycott him".

What does the police have to say?

"Even if he is accused of rape, he is still our guru", he said.

"I'm ready to submit this before the investigation team".
