National League Wild Card Game: Rockies vs Cubs

With a win, the Colorado Rockies can do no worse than force a tie-breaking game on Monday in Los Angeles against the Dodgers to decide who wins the National League West.

"At this point, I think everybody understands the magnitude of the game", said Rockies slugger Matt Holliday, whose team trails the season series 12-7.

The victor hosts Atlanta in a best-of-five Division Series starting Thursday; the loser is on the road for the NL wild-card game Tuesday against the loser of Monday's Brewers-Cubs NL Central tiebreaker. The loser will play either the Cubs or the Brewers in the NL Wild Card Game.

With the 24-year-old Buehler dominant at the mound, the Dodgers took control when Bellinger smashed a 95-mph fastball from German Marquez into right center-field for a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth.

Yelich went 0-for-2 with two walks and scored twice, ending his 10-game hitting streak. The rookie finished the season with a 2.15 ERA against the Rockies over 37 2/3 innings and a 2.62 ERA overall in 137 1/3 innings.

Shapiro also goes on to say that this one game didn't cost the Rockies the division title.

Lorenzo Cain hit a go-ahead single in the eighth inning to help Milwaukee to its eighth straight win and home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs.

So the Dodgers win the N.L. west for a record sixth time in a row.

Kenley Jansen closed out the win for the Dodgers after giving up back-to-back home runs to Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story, ensuring the Dodgers wouldn't have to play again until Thursday.

It was arguably the most dramatic setting for a game Colorado Rockies history.

The tiebreaker is considered a regular-season game, allowing both teams to use the expanded rosters, which went into effect September 1.

Blackmon tripled in his first at-bat and homered into the right-field seats in the third inning.

"I don't know how to say this politically correct, but he's got big balls", Kershaw said, according to Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times. In 2007, they beat the San Diego Padres to earn a wild-card berth, and then went on to sweep through the NL playoffs on the way to the World Series.

Buehler (8-5) did not give up a hit until Charlie Blackmon singled with one out in the sixth inning.

Late in the game, the fans chanted "Beat LA!" The Dodgers closed out the season with 25 victories in their last 35 games. The Dodgers have a better team ERA (3.41) than Colorado (4.36) but the Rockies have a better team batting average (.256) compared to the Dodgers'.249 average.
