Young England squad sees Sancho handed first call-up

The 48-year-old has handed maiden call-ups to Jadon Sancho, Mason Mount and James Maddison.

Sancho will become England's tenth youngest player if he makes his debut in their upcoming Nations League double header against Spain and Croatia.

Borussia Dortmund have extended the contract with England's U-19 worldwide Jadon Sancho ahead of schedule, the "BVB" confirmed in an official statement on Wednesday.

"It aligns with what we have done in the last 18 months", said Southgate.

Dele Alli has been sidelined by a hamstring problem, while fitness doubts have seen the likes of Fabian Delph, Adam Lallana, and Jesse Lingard omitted. We have some injuries in midfield, so there's an opportunity there.

"With the Premier League as it is we have to be creative, inventive and have to look longer term".

"[Sancho and Mount] are both in their formative stages but we think they can play in the group".

"Okay, we've got to think differently about it, be bold in some of our decisions and we'll get some of those right and some we won't get right". We have done that over the last few years.

The latter has been called up before but never named in a squad. Here's what caught the eye of the England manager.

"I think very often we hold youngsters back too much". I hope we can continue to excite the English public'.

"He's adapting to a big football club". Sancho has more assists than any other player in Europe, appearing mostly as an impact sub for the Bundesliga giants.

"Had a big impact with our junior teams over the last couple of years and he's really diligent without the ball".

"He doesn't look at players who might be ageing or just coming to do one job".

In addition, Ross Barkley's upturn in fortunes at Chelsea means he is in line to win his first cap since the friendly against Australia in May 2016.

"This year he's started the season in the team at Chelsea. I'm always trying to find that balance, the messaging has to be correct, but it's good for their development to see how they train with us". We try to work in the same way and the benefits from that are clear.

Southgate spoke well of Daniel Sturridge after overlooking the Liverpool striker and insisted the door is still open to Joe Hart, despite plumping for uncapped Marcus Bettinelli and Alex McCarthy along with Jack Butland and Jordan Pickford.

"I just think it's a brilliant honour and not something you should give away lightly".
