Google's new phone stops annoying calls

Because Android highlights Google services, it's key to Google's business of selling ads through its search engine and other mobile apps.

A Google spokesman said the new Pixel 3 phones would be the first to receive the Call Screen feature when the software was introduced in American cities next month.

Also announced at the "Made by Google" event: Pixel 3 & 3 XL, Pixel Slate and Chromecast 3. The new phones will be the centerpiece of a showcase scheduled to begin late Tuesday morning, October 9, 2018, in NY.

The new Pixel 3 phones also have the same dual-toned construction as the previous Pixels, but the plastic-feeling textured back has been replaced with a matte glass on the bottom and a glossy glass up top.

The result is a phone that feels noticeably higher-quality, and is immediately more attractive.

The XS photo was dark while the Pixel 3's shot of the same scene was unnaturally bright as if it was shot in the middle of the day (careful with that AI). Pixel 3 offers free unlimited storage for all your photos. Pixel Slate is thin and light in stylish midnight blue. Besides the fact that the XL is physically larger and weighs a bit more because of its size, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL look virtually identical.

Pixel 3 has 5.5-inch display while Pixel 3 XL has a 6.3-inch display screen. The Pixel 2 was plagued by a myriad of issues during launch, including the infamous OLED burn-in and blue shift in the Pixel 2 XL. Still, it's a definite improvement and a welcome relief after the disappointment of last year's model. It uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 chipset, has 4GB of RAM and a 3,732mAh battery. The RAM is the only thing that makes us slightly apprehensive; most devices these days have 6GB, even ones from past year. The Pixel allows Google to create and deliver a no compromise, high-end Android-powered experience with timely updates and cutting-edge features to rival the iPhone.

The camera is a big focus for Google's new Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. The handset will announce the recipient is "using a screening service from Google" and the caller should "go ahead and say your name and why you're calling". Among them, we can find a shooting mode called Top Shot, which analyzes photos and picks the best ones within a batch.

Based on our limited time with the camera, we're confident that the new features - combined with the image quality we know and love from the Pixel 2 - will cement the Pixel 3 as one of (and quite possibly the) best smartphone cameras around.

"If you have a Google tattoo on you, then these are the phones for you", IDC analyst Ramon Llamas said of the Pixel's limited appeal so far. Pixel 3 RRP starts at $1199, Pixel 3 XL RRP starts at $1349 and Pixel Stand RRP is $119.

The Pixel joins LG's V40 in sporting a second front lens to fit more people into selfies. As before, there's also a fingerprint reader for biometric login. There's also IPX8 waterproofing, which means it's rated for immersion in depths of over 1M.

For the first time, the Pixel supports wireless charging - and Google has even released its own Pixel Stand that will charge Google smartphones and some other compatible devices. All of these features are created to give the Pixel and edge.

Google has sold an estimated 7 million Pixels over the past two years, nearly imperceptible next to the 3.6 billion phones shipped during that time, according to IDC. Even better, your gift card is e-mailed to you just 2 days after activation of your new Pixel.
