Red Sox clinch World Series title with Game 5 win over Dodgers

Steve Pearce slammed a pair of home runs and David Price tossed a seven-inning gem to power the Boston Red Sox to a 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers and their fourth World Series title in 15 years on Sunday.

Los Angeles' hopes that Manny Machado would help deliver the Dodgers' first World Series title since 1988 ended up falling way short.

Game Five starter Price surrendered one run on three hits in seven plus innings to collect his third straight post-season win, while all the Red Sox runs were scored via home runs.

Steve Pearce hit two home runs for Boston, joining Babe Ruth and Ted Kluszewski as the only players 35 or older to have a multi-homer World Series game.

Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez added solo home runs in the sixth and seventh, respectively.

Pearce, a June acquisition from Toronto, had three homers and seven RBIs in the final two games of the Series. He then showed he was truly over what he called "the hump" with a strong six-inning outing and a win in Game 2 of the Series. "He was really good in so many ways", Red Sox President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski said before Game 5.

And the 35-year-old said the success at Dodger Stadium would be hard to top. Cool and collected, Pearce was a force to be reckoned with at the plate all postseason long, culminating in a terrific performance in the clinching game.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Rich Hill is relieved by Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts during the seventh inning in Game 4 of the World Series baseball game on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018, in Los Angeles. The Red Sox won it in the ninth and we can all get to sleep at a reasonable hour tonight.

It seemed like every move Cora made in October came up golden for the Red Sox. David Freese hit a leadoff home run in the first inning for the Dodgers, who finished with just three hits Sunday. He became the first to pitch into the eighth inning of a Series game on one day of rest since the Yankees' Bob Turley in 1957.

For a long time, Price had been known for his playoff shortcomings, having never won a game.

Pearce is headed to free agency, but after the thump he provided against left-handed pitching this year, the Red Sox should be hot on his trail.

"Chris is okay", Cora said.

David Price got emotional during a postgame press conference after the Red Sox won the World Series. They went 22-9-1 in spring training. "I think we were extremely fortunate to get him at the time that we did".

"This was a tough one for us tonight, it really was", Kershaw, who now will need to decide if he will exercise the opt-out clause in his contract, said.

That all came after he started Game 2 and pitched in relief in Game 3. They thrived in their role, and Cora not only looks like a genius, but a genius who will soon have another World Series ring. He tapped his heart several times to Red Sox fans behind the first base dugout while walking to the bench.
