Beloved father, fearless leader and unparalleled walker slayer Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) is departing "The Walking Dead" for good this weekend, but that doesn't mean his memory won't live on.

Written by AMC's chief content officer, Scott M. Gimple, and based on the character from Robert Kirkman's comic, the series of AMC Studios Original Films will begin production as early as 2019.

Gimple called the films a "big evolution of what we've been doing on the show". There is something exciting about moving toward an end game for Rick's story that appealed to me.

Reaction to the announcement has been mixed.

While the exit of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), in an unprecedented manner for the show, is certainly a turning point, it's also the beginning of something new for the series.

And other prominent cast members could soon follow Lincoln and Cohan.

'It is about who he is and who he's going to be - and certainly how he deals with the situation he's in, ' Gimple added. But don't get too excited, Lincoln will still no longer be appearing in the Walking Dead's TV series.

Now, in his final stand, Rick Grimes says goodbye to his family. Viewers were torn; while some wanted Rick to finally meet his end, others were happy that they would see more of him in the future. Can you talk a little bit about her departure and if we'll ever see her again. "There were story ideas brewing that, as the years went on, seemed very compatible with continuing to tell the Rick story in another format that would allow [Lincoln] time with his family".
