Jeff Sessions resigns as attorney general at Trump’s request

President Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon as soon as news of Attorney General Jeff Sessions' resignation broke.

It is an abrupt end to a hard tenure for Jeff Sessions, who was the first Republican senator to back Donald Trump in his quest for the presidency.

That set off immediate alarm bells: Whitaker has been overtly critical of the broad scope granted to Mueller's team to probe beyond allegations Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation in 2016, into other ties between Trump, his family and aides, and Russian Federation - an investigation the president calls a "witch hunt".

Mr. Trump announced in a tweet that he was naming Mr. Sessions' chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, a former USA attorney from Iowa, as acting attorney general.

Mr Sessions cited his role as a senior adviser to the Trump presidential campaign as the reason he would not oversee the probe and instead and appointed Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to oversee the investigation.

But Department of Justice spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores told The Hill in a statement that "the Acting Attorney General is in charge of all matters under the purview of the Department of Justice", which would include the Russian Federation probe.

Democratic Representative Jerry Nadler, who will likely become chairman of the House Judiciary Committee - which has congressional oversight over the Mueller probe - immediately responded to Sessions' resignation by demanding an explanation for the change. "The acting attorney general is in charge of all matters under the purview of the Department of Justice", said department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores.

Only having fired Comey, Trump could not fire Sessions, too - at least, not without risking a firestorm that might threaten a president who had already demonstrated a strong pyromaniacal streak.

"Congress must take immediate action to protect the rule of law and integrity of the investigation". They now have subpoena power over things like Mr Trump's tax returns and have indicated they are willing to use it. It's also worth noting that Graham himself has been rumored to be a possible replacement for Sessions.

Their relationship wasn't always fractured.

It is time for Rosenstein, who is the acting attorney general for the purposes of this investigation, to order Mueller to limit the scope of his investigation to the four corners of the order appointing him special counsel.

Mr Sessions cited news reports of previously undisclosed meetings he had with Russia's ambassador to Washington as his reason for recusal. He also said that Whitaker should recuse himself given previous comments about defunding and putting limitations on the probe.

The announcement set off a frenzy inside the White House, with Trump directing his White House counsel to call Sessions beforehand and urge him not to step aside.

But that support began to fade, with Grassley suggesting over the summer that he might have time for a hearing after all.

"At your request, I am submitting my resignation", Sessions said in a letter to Trump.
