The news agency noted that angle-of-attack errors can cause pilots to lose control of an aircraft and make it impossible to correct the course of a flight, and this was particularly an issue when jet aircraft were first entering circulation.

"Angle of attack" refers to the angle between relative wind and a reference line on the plane - the sensors' goal is to ensure that air flows over an aircraft's wings, Bloomberg reported. The condition could even lead to "excessive nose-down attitude, significant altitude loss, and possible impact with terrain", he added.

The directive gives regulatory weight to Boeing's safety bulletin that it sent to operators of Boeing 737 MAX 8 and MAX 9 planes based on findings from the ongoing Indonesian investigation into the October 29 crash of a Lion Air jet.

The FAA directive applies to about 250 Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft operating worldwide.

The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation has begun an audit of Lion Air (JT, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) and has also started impromptu checks of various other Indonesian carriers following the crash of one of the low-priced carrier's B737-8s on October 29.

The directive points operators "to existing flight crew procedures to address circumstances where there is erroneous input from an AOA sensor", the statement said.

As of November 7, the DJPU has conducted in-situ ramp checks of aircraft that belong to Lion Air, Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Sriwijaya Air, NAM Air, Wings Air (Indonesia), and Indonesia AirAsia.

On Tuesday, Indonesian investigators found that the Lion Air flight had a malfunctioning air speed indicator for its last four flights and crucially, at the time of the crash.

It did not give more details and did not speculate on how the indicator problem may have played a role in the crash, as it continues to mine the flight recorder - seen as key to answering why a almost brand new plane fell out of the sky.

Indonesian investigators said their flight procedure recommendations to Boeing were based on how the flight crew responded to problems on the Bali-to-Jakarta flight.

"The investigation into Lion Air flight 610 is ongoing and Boeing continues to cooperate fully and provide technical assistance at the request and under the direction of government authorities investigating the accident", it said.

According to USA Today, Boeing has delivered more than 200 models of the Boeing 737 and has received more than 4,500 orders.

Boeing says in the bulletin that if this failure arises, "initially, higher control forces may be needed to overcome any nose-down stabilizer trim".

There are a total of 49 Boeing 737 Max planes in service across the US, including 26 737 Max 8 planes in service at Southwest Airlines, 16 at American Airlines and seven Max 9 planes at United Airlines.
