It is basically a phone with a 4.6-inch Super AMOLED "cover display" that unfolds into a tablet with a 7.3-inch Super AMOLED "main display".

While this isn't a finished device, and the eventual commercially available version will be different, they were showing off the Infinity Flex Display, the development of which included inventing brand new materials to make it out of.

Samsung Electronics has unveiled its much-anticipated foldable phone in San Francisco, urging Android developers to start writing apps for it.

Samsung is now accepting sign-ups for the beta of One UI, which will roll out to S9/Note 9 devices sometime this month.

Mr Dave Burke, vice-president of engineering for Google's Android software platform, told a Google conference in California that Samsung planned to introduce a new Android-based device early next year.

Google's stripped-down "Android Go" operating system designed for budget phones is still going strong, and Samsung's upcoming Galaxy J4 Core is the latest example of that.

"The foldable display lays the foundation for a new kind of mobile experience", said Koh Dong-jin, president and CEO of the IT and mobile communications division at Samsung. Huawei wants to release a foldable handset and LG is working on foldable TVs, according to The Verge.

As shown in the image above, the device is a wallet-like gadget that folds in half.

Samsung is also adding five additional languages to Bixby in the coming months - such as British English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
