They then headed to the presidential palace in Carthage, outside Tunis, for closed-door talks, the only scheduled activity during the brief visit by the prince, who was on a tour of Arab countries before heading to the Group of 20 summit in Argentina.

US President Donald Trump will not formally meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at an upcoming G20 summit in Argentina.

The Tunisian presidency said the two men had discussed "ways to strengthen cooperation", including boosting investment as well as security and military links.

Saudi Arabia has said the crown prince had no prior knowledge of the killing of the Washington Post columnist at Riyadh's consulate in Istanbul last month.

After a week of controversy about the expected visit, Guitouni stated that "the Saudi Crown Prince's visit is an expression of friendliness to President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and has nothing to do with oil prices in the worldwide market".

Riyadh is a close regional ally of Cairo and it has supported Egypt with billions of USA dollars and tons of oil supplies to boost the Egyptian economy following the military ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 in response to mass protests.

Bin Salman is expected to arrive in Tunisia this afternoon.

"The Tunisian people have a special place among the Saudi people and the two countries are always working to improve relations for the benefit of the two nations", Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told Al Arabiya before departing Tunis on Tuesday.

He was killed and reportedly dismembered in what Saudi Arabia said was a "rogue" operation.

"But even a small risk of a messy dispute in the Argentinian courts could overshadow a trip previously seen as a chance for the prince to show he remained welcome among world leaders even after the conclusion of U.S. intelligence agencies that he had authorized the killing of Khashoggi", the Herald added, noting that MBS' post-Khashoggi charm offensive has been going fairly well thus far.

Just as Saudi Arabia is one of the biggest supporters of Egypt and its people, so Egypt has been the biggest supporter of the Kingdom, and of its policies and steps toward an enlightened future.

According to the source, the Moroccan king decided his country was not ready to host the crown prince "at such a critical juncture", the report said. However, the Trump administration has been reluctant to further punish the Saudi government, citing alliance significance and Saudi Arabia's purchase of US military equipment.

The Sydney Morning Herald speculated on Tuesday that Argentine officials will treat their investigation as "preliminary" and not almost far enough advanced to produce an arrest warrant for the crown prince, who would most likely claim diplomatic immunity in any event.

A dozen Tunisian non-governmental organizations issued a joint statement saying the visit is aimed at cleaning up Prince Mohammed's image after the Khashoggi death, and denounced "flagrant violations of human rights and repressive practices against freedom of speech" in Saudi Arabia.
