New Zealand clinch sixth Dubai Sevens title

The U.S. knocked out Fiji in the quarterfinals and Australia in the semis. But the Eagles, at full complement, could not expose the exhausted New Zealanders because they were unable to offload, and were plagued by errors.

The second-quarter final saw New Zealand and Scotland embroiled in a first-half arm-wrestle before the All Blacks Sevens opened up.

The All Blacks Sevens ground out a 7-5 win over England in Saturday's first semi-final, reaching their 10th Dubai decider.

Meanwhile injury-hit New Zealand won the opening round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, defeating the U.S. 21-5 in the Dubai Sevens final.

A converted try to Ngarohi McGarvey Black finished the scoring, as the New Zealand men followed their women's team from a day before in becoming champions. A try-saving tackle from Mike Ellery prevented the Blitzboks answering back before Mitchell's second and a Tom Bowen try increased England's lead to 17-0 at half-time.

"Canada, they're just getting better and better", said New Zealand's Tyla Nathan-Wong, named player of the final.

"We are thrilled to have received this award, which is the result of a dedicated team working with strong and committed partners that are allowing us to deliver a world-class event year over year", he said in a statement.

Canada went 1-2 Friday, losing 26-12 to England and 31-19 to Australia before beating Japan 27-7.

The USA then edged a thrilling game against Australia 22-17, with Danny Barrett crossing more than two minutes after the hooter when the scores had been tied up. However, Waisea Nacuqu had other ideas and his breakaway try levelled the scores, only for Vilimoni Botitu to step up and miss the straightforward conversion to mean extra-time would decide the victor.

The men, whose pre-season preparations were interrupted by a labour dispute with Rugby Canada, now head to Cape Town for next weekend's second stop of the HSBC World Rugby Series. It was the Eagles' first time reaching the Dubai sevens final and thus their best finish in the prestigious season opener.

I am hoping to contribute more than past year when I was concussed in the opening seconds of our first pool game. "We want to try to finish top four and give ourselves a little break at the end of the year".

Canada will face Zimbabwe in the consolation Challenge Trophy quarterfinal.
