Maine Rep.-elect Golden votes against Pelosi

The remaining votes will be held in order of seniority of the positions: speaker, majority leader, majority whip, assistant leader, caucus vice chair, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chair, DPCC chair, three DPCC co-chairs, caucus representative for a member serving five or fewer terms and freshman caucus representative.

Pelosi ran unopposed as the nominee for speaker in a closed-door Democratic caucus election Wednesday despite unrest from those clamoring for new leadership.

To become speaker, she will need support from a majority of the full House - 218, if all members vote. More than two-thirds of the class will represent red-leaning districts while others, like Rep. -elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, were elected on leftist platforms in deep blue districts to replace longtime Democratic incumbents.

"Are there dissenters? Yes", Pelosi said after receiving her party's nomination.

"The battle is the floor", said Rep. Linda Sanchez of California, among those who signed a letter calling for new leadership.

"I ask you to support her for this", Schiff told his colleagues. That would lower the number of "yes" votes she needs.

But the strength of Pelosi's candidacy was shown in the long line of those nominating her, starting with Rep. Joe Kennedy of MA, the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy, and no fewer than eight colleagues seconding the choice, including Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, the civil rights leader, and three newly elected lawmakers. The press characterized as the enemy of the people. They were running unopposed.

Women who oppose Pelosi's bid for speaker take issue with the suggestion that the movement against her is sexist or anti-feminist.

Earlier this month, the American people sent a clear message to Washington by electing a Democratic majority and the most diverse Congress in our nation's history. Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall. "Has she negotiated and given them some of the things that they want? Yes".
