The Senate on Tuesday and the House on Wednesday gave final approval to the massive 2018 Farm Bill, including a provision that will end an eight-decade ban on industrial hemp, that non-psychoactive but extremely useful member of the cannabis family. The House voted 369-47 for the legislation after the Senate approved it 87-13.

Trump has 10 days to sign or veto the $867 billion bill; his signature is considered nearly certain as Congress scrambles to finish its work before this session ends December 21.

Allow nationwide hemp production, while permitting states to submit individual plans to regulate the crop to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which will oversee hemp the same as any other agricultural commodity.

USA hemp-derived CBD sales grew from US$129-million in 2016 to US$190-million in 2017, according to market research firm New Frontier Data. "The passing of the Farm Bill is a great step in the right direction, but much more needs to be done to help pull our nation's dairy farmers facing financial crisis as a result of low milk prices and the impacts of retaliatory tariffs on dairy product exported to some of our major dairy trading partners", the group said in a statement. Rodes says growing hemp isn't new to Virginia, but it's been illegal for quite a few years. Village Farms produces and distributes fresh, premium-quality produce with consistency 365-days a year to national grocers in the USA and Canada from more than nine million square feet of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) greenhouses in British Columbia and Texas, as well as from its partner greenhouses in British Columbia, Ontario, and Mexico.

"I mean we even have pictures where we actually took the same 1947 International Harvester cultivators and cultivated the crop", said Ben Pasley of Mount Folley Farms.

The bill includes The Hemp Farming Act of 2018, which officially removes industrial hemp from the federal list of Schedule I controlled substances.

USA hemp companies may now be able to list on US stock exchanges, as well, added Khurram Malik, CEO of Biome Grow. "But it was most important to provide the certainty that farm bill provides our farmers".

The new company aspires to become one of the largest hemp production and CBD extraction companies in North America, producing more than 6,600 pounds of CBD isolate (3,000 kilograms) a day by mid-2019, according to a company statement on the deal.

The federal legalization of hemp will also undoubtedly attract investors and businesses from outside the U.S.

"There's nothing on this planet that's been able to utilize so many different industries as this plant here", Lee said. Grassley joined eight other Republicans in opposing the measure, which was supported by every Senate Democrat.

Vicente Sederberg's Mason Tvert (middle) gathered members of the Colorado General Assembly and hemp industry to celebrate industrial hemp's impending federal legalization. The Delta, B.C. -based company entered the cannabis industry in 2017 through a partnership with licensed producer Emerald Health Therapeutics Inc.

Thune said that of the approximately 20 provisions he worked on that made it into the Senate bill, almost all the ideas behind them came from the suggestions and complaints of South Dakota's farmers and ranchers.

The bill also affects research into the plant.
