How much will it take to get Harper, Machado to South Side?

You'd think turning the calendar to a new year would have provided additional clarity to the Bryce Harper situation, but that's far from the case.

Without question, joining a team with potential like Philadelphia could work wonders for a player like Harper, especially when seeing all of the extra games he would get to face his former team in the Washington Nationals. After allegedly offering an initial deal of $300 million over 10 years, the Nats reportedly pitched Harper "much more" than $300 million.

The Chicago White Sox's pursuit of free agent infielder Manny Machado appears to be heating up.

Unless the market for these two 26-year-old superstars has decreased to a point undreamt of when the offseason began, an offer to Machado worth "closer to $200 million than $300 million" probably isn't 10 years long.

If Chicago isn't willing to go seven-plus years, they'll likely sit back and wait for free agency in 2020. As one of this offseason's most coveted targets, Machado visited the Phillies and Yankees in addition to the White Sox last month. With Machado already having very public meetings with those two teams and the Yankees, who have downplayed any interest in Harper, it's been believed that Machado would be the first to sign.

The Philadelphia franchise is also keen on Manny Machado - probably the second most sought-after free agent in baseball at the moment - and signing him is their main focus. Maybe they end up the only team willing to hand out the richest contract in baseball history. If anything, the water has gotten even murkier as reports have surfaced that the Phillies - who it's been said Harper isn't high on - are planning to meet with the outfielder in person after a Winter Meetings powwow with just Scott Boras.

That could then leave the door open for the Nationals to make a similar offer to the one they reportedly made in September.
