Novak Djokovic suffers surprise defeat to Roberto Bautista Agut at Qatar Open

Playing the match of his life, seventh seed Roberto Bautista Agut yesterday rallied from a set down to stun World No. 1 Novak Djokovic 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4 to reach the final of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open.

Bautista, ranked 24th in the world, won for only the second time in nine matches against the Serb, a two-time champion in Qatar.

"He played really well, smart, changing up the rhythm and the pace of the ball and moving me around.I was kind of in a corner and I had to find my way and fight my way through".

Asked about his workload, Djokovic said: 'I wasn't the freshest, you know.

Novak Djokovic had to work again in Doha.

"I feel I have a gear or two (to go) up still", said Djokovic.

Later on Thursday, Djokovic spent another 65 minutes on court alongside his brother Marko in a doubles match that they lost in a deciding tie-break to David Goffin and Pierre-Hugues Herbert. "He has a very physical style of Tennis which obviously is putting a lot of load and pressure on his joints, on his knees".

"He played a good game".

In the decider, the World No. 26 took an early 2-0 lead to put pressure on Djokovic and although the reigning Wimbledon and US Open made a valiant bid to bounce back, Bautista Agut held on to register one of his remarkable wins of his career. "I did everything well today".

Djokovic crashed out and failed in his quest of winning the event a third time, losing 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 to the Spaniard.

Djokovic lost two of his first three service games against Basilashvili and dropped the first set, as he had done in his last-16 win over Marton Fucsovics on Wednesday.

Unlike many Spanish players who tend to favour clay, Bautista Agut is more suited to hard courts like Doha because he is a counter attacking player who plays lower, flatter shots, and does not rely so much on bounce or spin. "In conditions like this, it's quite suitable to him", Djokovic said of Bautista Agut.
