The latest viral challenge is responsible for a crash on a street in Layton, Utah, police said this week.

The movie Bird Box has become a social media sensation since its, with viewers sharing hilarious memes about being blindfolded to avoid certain situations.

That's the assessment from the Layton City Police Department, which posted photos of a car-truck collision in which one driver, a 17-year-old girl, was "blindfolded" by a knit cap she had pulled down over her eyes.

Sadly, some people still are still embracing the stupid, as seen by this 16-year-old motorist in the USA.

She had allegedly pulled a beanie over her eyes as part of the challenge, before losing control of her vehicle and smashing into another driver, a light pole and a sound barrier.

"Honestly I'm nearly embarrassed to have to say "Don't drive with your eyes covered" but you know apparently we do have to say that", Lyman said. "The stakes are just so high and it's just such a potentially risky thing as it is: to try and do it in that way is inexcusable. It really puts everybody at risk", said Travis Lyman of the Layton police.

While the company called for people not to hurt themselves, it kicked off its own Bird Box challenge of sorts - partnering with popular Australian Twitch streamers to play their games blindfolded.

Netflix already has tried to combat the social media-driven phenomenon, tweeting a January 2 advisory that "Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes".

No one was injured in Monday's crash but authorities didn't discover the reason of the accident until Friday.
