Police Release Persons Of Interest Photos In Jussie Smollett Hate Crime Assault

The president's remarks came after Chicago Police released shadowy images of two men caught on surveillance camera near the spot where the actor said he was attacked.

When news broke of Smollett's attack, both fans and other celebrities alike were outraged and hurt by the news.

The actor then checked himself into Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Police didn't specify the race of the alleged suspects but did call it a "possible racially-charged assault and battery" and that they are "treating it as a possible hate crime".

Jussie Smollett's family has released a statement, days after being attacked by two unknown offenders in Chicago.

Investigators have video of Smollett entering the hotel after the alleged attack with what appears to be a noose around his neck, Guglielmi said. When officers arrived, the actor had cuts and scrapes on his face and the rope around his neck.

There is also evidence to suggest that the attack on Smollett was premeditated.

"That I can tell you is frightful", Trump said.

Before Smollett's incident, additional security was hired for the Empire set after Fox Studios' Chicago offices allegedly received a threatening homophobic letter addressed to the actor, who is gay, last week.

From there, Howard described Smollett's personality as one that is always trying to lift people up when they're down, adding to the injustice as to how such an innocent man could be "attacked by a bunch of hyenas".

A spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department told ET earlier this week that Smollett told detectives late Tuesday afternoon in a follow-up interview that his two attackers yelled, "MAGA country" to him during the attack, referring to Trump's "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan.

Fox announced its plans to postpone production on Empire, though it was because of the freezing weather in Chicago, not the attack.

In addition to his acting career, Smollett has a music career and is a noted activist, particularly on LBGTQ issues.

Now in its fifth season, the hourlong drama follows an African-American family as they navigate the ups and downs of the record industry.

Police are gathering and reviewing video from scores of surveillance cameras in the area. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family.

Police say the cameras have helped them make thousands of arrests. He is still scheduled to perform Saturday night in Los Angeles at the Troubadour. "They are in the area that we have determined it could have taken place ... in the time and the area".
