Rumors are swirling that Davis wants to play for the Lakers and he wants the Pelicans to send him there before next Thursday's National Basketball Association trade deadline, but GM Dell Demps isn't entertaining that notion right now.

All the focus has been on the Los Angeles Lakers, who have been installed as favorites to land the in-demand power forward, while there is also interest from the New York Knicks, Milwaukee Bucks and other franchises.

Boston has been among the teams interested in acquiring All-Star Anthony Davis, whose trade request from the Pelicans recently went public.

Davis, who is eligible to sign a five-year, $240 million supermax contract after this season, is under contract through the 2019-20 campaign. "Obviously, they are making moves to position themselves for this upcoming summer". Davis, for example, is incentivized to remove the Celtics as a bidder for him so he can achieve his preference and be sent to the Los Angeles Lakers.

When questioned Friday by reporters about his future with the Celtics, Irving replied, "Ask me July 1". It might not make sense to trade for him if they believe they can get him via free agency anyway.

A day after the Knicks shipped Kristaps Porzingis to Dallas and created enough salary-cap space to sign two max-level free agents this summer, Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving backed off his verbal commitment to re-sign with Boston. As a team that desires another star, the Lakers have been linked already to Davis.

And for that reason, National Basketball Association expert Colin Cowherd has labeled Irving an untrustworthy player owing to the number of rumors he has heard about him in the past year. He's now in his second season with the Celtics and learning just how hard it is to lead a team to a championship. "Boston has been calling New Orleans for the past year-plus on Davis, and has gathered multiple first-round picks and young players to include in a package for him".
