Kyler Murray walks away from $4m as he chooses National Football League over MLB

Murray's locker remained empty on Monday, Feb. 11, 2019, in the spring training clubhouse of the Oakland Athletics, who say they are uncertain when or if the Heisman Trophy victor will report to the baseball team he signed with last summer.

Now for the first time since the drama of baseball or football became a reality, Murray is saying no thanks to the A's and heading to the NFL.

"Football has been my love and passion my entire life", Murray said in Monday's statement.

As a result of his decision, Murray will give up the vast majority of the $4.66 million bonus he was set to receive from the A's after they made him the ninth overall pick in last year's Major League Baseball draft.

The Oakland A's had hoped that 2018 first-round pick Kyler Murray would report to spring training, but that's clearly not going to happen. Murray was the ninth overall pick in last June's baseball amateur draft, and the outfielder agreed to a minor league contract with Oakland for a $4.66m signing bonus. He will reportedly repay $1.29m (£1m) of the $1.5m (£1.17m) he received past year and forfeit the remaining $3.16m (£2.46m).

Second, it appears Murray didn't let the A's know of his decision before his made his announcement on social media.

It was originally believed that Murray would play one year of quarterback for the Sooners before embarking on his Major League Baseball career.

Although NFL talent evaluators gravitate toward taller quarterbacks, the success of stars such as Russell Wilson (at 5-11) and Baker Mayfield (generously listed at 6-1) have caused some NFL scouts to reconsider that preference. He led OU to the Big 12 title and a College Football Playoff appearance, winning the Heisman Trophy in the process.

Earlier on Monday, A's president Billy Beane said the situation around Murray was still uncertain. Now that he's firmly cemented himself as a football prospect who will attend the NFL Combine later this month, the attention shifts to Murray's potential NFL home.
