"Now they got to do something else because they put all their eggs in the Michael Cohen basket and he came in here and lied again", Jordan said.

"The defense now to Cohen saying under oath he NEVER asked for a pardon is a familiar one; What's The Meaning of Never", Giuliani tweeted. "He ended up lying and he has regretted it and he's going to jail for it, and he said to the court in his heartfelt way - I take ownership and I don't blame anybody but myself".

Cohen's lawyers say he did not contradict himself to Congress because he did not ask Trump himself for a pardon. It also followed a Friday tweet by the president accusing him of committing perjury in sworn testimony last week before the House Intelligence Committee.

Cohen pleaded guilty in August to tax crimes, lying to Congress and campaign finance violations.

"During that time period, he directed his attorney to explore possibilities of a pardon at one point with Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, as well as other lawyers advising President Trump", Davis said in a statement.

"Today's testimony by Michael Cohen that attorneys for the President edited or changed his statement to Congress to alter the duration of the Trump Tower Moscow negotiations is completely false". Trump also plays a central role in a separate case in NY, where prosecutors have implicated him in a crime.

Cohen said he has employed at least seven law firms in the previous year on matters related to Mr Trump.

In August 2018, Weisselberg was granted immunity in connection to the investigation into Cohen and called to testify before a federal grand jury.

Davis said the pardon was "dangled" by Team Trump and that Cohen's statement to the committee was truthful.

He followed up that public House Oversight appearance with the first part of his closed-door House Intelligence interview the following day, where Schiff said the committee was able to "drill down" certain issues in even more detail.

Davis did not immediately respond Thursday to text messages and emails seeking additional information.

"The Abuse of the Pardon Prevention Act creates a powerful check against deploying pardons in cases involving the president or his immediate family by ensuring that any evidence gathered in such an investigation is provided to Congress", said Schiff.

Cohen's complaint alleges that in July 2017, the Trump Organization agreed to pay his legal fees throughout the investigations of the president but stopped doing so last May. They include lawsuits involving his payment to Daniels, meetings connected to Mueller's ongoing investigation, multiple House and Senate hearings and a lawsuit brought by New York's attorney general against the Donald J. Trump Foundation.
