Only this country can do that, and only if we build a movement that includes all of us.

The bid comes three and a half months after a narrow loss for Senate in Texas, a campaign that catapulted the 46-year-old, three-term lawmaker from El Paso to national prominence.

He had already planned to visit the University of Northern Iowa on Saturday to campaign for a Democrat running in a special state Senate election, AP reported. "Maybe that will happen to Beto O'Rourke but I somehow doubt it".

He took a well-publicized road trip across the American Southwest, stopping at colleges and diners.

Trump has repeatedly blasted the idea of an O'Rourke presidential try, calling him a "flake" and a "total lightweight" and joking, "I thought you were supposed to win before you run for president".

O'Rourke was little-known outside his hometown of El Paso until he challenged Republican Sen. He was a heavy underdog when he challenged Cruz, a Republican, in mostly conservative Texas, but he quickly demonstrated an ability to draw capacity crowds and raise money from voters nationwide. He collected endorsements in that race from the likes of Beyonce and Lebron James, fueling interest from the national media and drawing comparisons to John F. Kennedy.

While challenging Cruz, O'Rourke insisted that he had no interest in running for president, vowing to quietly return to El Paso should he lose.

Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-El Paso, the 2018 Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Texas, speaks during a campaign rally in El Paso, Texas. In an interview with the Washington Post in January, O'Rourke struggled to define his solutions for key immigration issues, even though he represented a district along the border.

"I'm just born to do this", O'Rourke told the magazine.

O'Rourke's entry would see him join a primary field of more than a dozen Democratic candidates, many of whom are women or people of color.

His background as a former member of punk rock bands also endeared himself to younger fans. "It's a big part of why I'm running", O'Rourke told KTSM in a text message.

"There's a certain group of people that are political in nature, and they just have a hunger for that", Jordan Grant, CC '96 and one of O'Rourke's teammates on the heavyweight rowing team at the time said.

On former Vice President Joe Biden, Klobuchar said, "I think competition is good for the party, and that's going to be up to him".
