"But for 2019, Apple will continue to roll out three models following the screen technologies and sizes of the three phones launched in 2018: two OLED models available in 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch screens, and a 6.1-inch LCD model", the source allegedly confirmed.

Shares of Japan Display rose as much as 16 percent in early trade on April 1 and were up 13 percent at 78 yen as of 0211 GMT. The iPhone XR now uses LCD display - which is very much less vibrant than an OLED display - compared to the better OLED displays found on the iPhone XS and the XS Max, in order to cut production costs. Right now, Apple is said to be exploring two different panels, namely the Samsung Display Y-Octa and the LG Display's TOE touch system, with the first currently in pole-position. This is planned to be one of the widest ranges of iPhone models in the company's history, and it has also been confirmed by the company's supply chain providers as well. Apple had been relying on LG Display for the OLED screens in its Apple Watch.

Rumor mill: The last few years have seen most smartphones increase in size, but some consumers would prefer to go back to less bulky devices with smaller screens.

Japan Display, formed in 2012 in a government-backedmerger of the ailing display units of Sony Corp, Toshiba Corp and Hitachi Ltd, flagged its fifth straight year of net losses in February. This company, which was born as an LCD technology joint venture by Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi, realized the full potential of OLED (organic light-emitting diode) panels a little too late, staying focused on liquid-crystal displays past their prime.

Japan Display intends to build an OLED manufacturing plant in China.

Digitimes also claims that its sources say that all of the new iPhones will be OLED by 2020, which is in line with other rumours.

OLED displays produce deep blacks, and also allows the iPhone to have a nice, bezel-less design as well.

This is according to a report from Digitimes, which adds that the 2020 iPhone generation will introduce a smaller model as well.
