Put a Smile on For the First Joker Trailer

In the first trailer for Joker, Joaquin's Arthur Fleck is down on his luck.

It's terrifying, and also totally awesome.

The tagline for the film is "put on a happy face".

There are several shots in the trailer that hint at an uncomfortably close relationship between Arthur and his mother, played in the film by Frances Conroy.

The trailer definitely backs up actor Marc Maron's claims that the film would be "more of an origin story and a character study of a mentally ill person that becomes The Joker". The movie also stars Oscar victor Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), Marc Maron (GLOW) and Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2).

Watching a film where it's not the main character becoming a hero but instead a villain is an interesting concept, one not seen very often.

"Joker movie in theaters on October 4".

A press release reads: "Joker centres around the iconic arch nemesis of the caped crusader and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen". I'm excited to see what director and co-writer Todd Phillips has in mind for this latest incarnation of the Joker.

"I used to think that my life was a tragedy", Arthur says.

Time and time again a new iteration of Batman's archnemesis has come out, most famously played by actors such as Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Cameron Monaghan.

Brandon Katz from New York-based website Observer was equally sold, commenting Phoenix's beleaguered Joker looked "emaciated and disillusioned".

Joaquin Phoenix portrays the sadistic Joker in the upcoming self-titled film coming this fall.

You know you're going to get something special with most Joaquin Phoenix performances - and he looks committed and compelling here.
